But He Did!

“He however, took her by the hand and called aloud, ‘Child awake!’”
Luke 8:54 (Weymouth)

I’m always amazed by Jesus’ willingness to drop everything and put his life on hold in order to serve others. He had this special empathy for people who were in need of him and readily responded to their requests; sometimes even going with them to their homes.

His encounter with Jairus, a leader of the local synagogue, highlights this wonderful attitude, that nothing was too much bother, and I believe the reason was that Jesus felt this father’s pain in his own heart!

Someone once defined empathy as—“Your pain in my heart!”  That’s how Jesus was and I guess that’s the way we should be also, whenever we are approached by those who need us.

But let’s walk alongside Jesus and Jairus as they go to his home.  When we do this we find that someone else had need of the Master:  the lady with the issue of blood, who touched the hem of his garment and was healed.  Even though she touched without asking, and by doing so caused Jesus to become defiled by her condition, his words to her were: “Daughter, your faith has made you well. Go in peace.” (Luke 8:48 NLT).

Did He resent the intrusion—no! Did He rebuke her for her actions—no!  Did He send her off with a blessing—you bet!  But I have a feeling that Jairus was a bit impatient and upset—after all, his only child was dying. Then the news that he never wanted to hear came.  A messenger from his home arrived and told him, “Your little girl is dead. There is no use troubling the Teacher now.” (Luke 8:49 NLT).

I’m sure he cried and wailed; I’m sure he blamed the lady who had delayed Jesus; but fortunately, his pain was still in the heart of Jesus who encouraged him saying, “Don’t be afraid, just trust me and she will be alright.” (Verse 50).

He didn’t need to visit the home of Jairus to heal his daughter but He did!
He didn’t need to endure the scorn of the mourners but He did!
He didn’t need to touch this child and become defiled (Numbers 5:1-3), but he did!
Jesus upset and astonished many people during his ministry, by his willingness to do the unthinkable, to touch the untouchable, and to go where he was needed at any given moment.

Thank you Lord, for the amazing example you set, by being available whenever you were needed; and for the special way that you calmed the peoples’ fears and strengthened their faith by your love. Help us by your indwelling power and presence to do likewise.
