The Explanation of God

“No man has seen God at any time; the only-begotten God who is in the bosom of the Father, He has explained Him”
John 1:18 (New American Standard Bible)

Jesus is the explanation of God.

In the Greek culture of John’s readers God was basically incomprehensible. No one could figure Him out. Aristotle had explained that God was the “Unmoved Mover’. That meant that God was responsible for the creation of everything and that He planned how things would happen. At the same time it meant that God was unchangeable, and He could not be moved by human circumstances and events. Aristotle’s God was not involved emotionally with humanity.

John, however, wanted to clarify the nature of God. God was not the Greek unmoved god of their philosophy. Rather God was revealed in Jesus. Jesus Christ was one of a kind. He was and is the only begotten God. The translation above says that Jesus explained God. It was not referring to anything that Christ said about God. It was not about words. Rather Jesus Himself is the explanation of God. Another translation, the Amplified, puts the same verse this way: “He has revealed Him and brought Him where He can be seen; He has interpreted Him and He has made Him known”. Jesus did not add or take away from God, but showed Him as the complete, compassionate, loving God that He is.

If someone asks you to explain what God is like or who he is, direct him or her to Jesus. Jesus is the living explanation of God.

Father, thank you that you have revealed Yourself in Jesus, that He is the explanation of who You are and how You care for us.
In Jesus’ name.
