The Garment of God

“But clothe yourself with the Lord Jesus Christ (the Messiah), and make no provision for (indulging) the flesh…”
Romans 13:14 (Amplified)

Did you realise that Oscar is 80 years old this year? If you’re asking yourself Oscar who? The answer is; the Academy Award Trophy. It’s the figure of a man leaning on a crusader sword and standing on a reel of film. He was introduced as an Academy award on May 16th 1927 and for about 4 years was simply known as the Statuette but in 1931 the academy librarian, a lady called Margaret Herrick commented; “Hey, he looks just like my uncle Oscar!” And the name stuck.

Ever since that time actors have striven, laboured, agonised, and fought to gain this supreme award. They spend their whole career just working toward this goal for the best performance, the most realistic portrayal of some character—their most perfect and convincing role. Actors are said to “put on” the character they are portraying, in fact if that person is a historical figure they will spend months studying the character. If someone is taking on the persona of Sir Winston Churchill for a film, you might say that Churchill is living again because another person has put on his character, his nature, his mannerisms, his mind and his lifestyle! So, for a short period of time Churchill lives again in the actor!

I’ve heard a Christian described as someone within whom Christ lives again, and I guess that about sums us up. This is the lifestyle to which we have been called.  We are to emulate Jesus, as it says in 1 Peter 2:21 (KNJV), “For to this you were called, because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that we should follow His steps.”

“Live a life filled with love for others, following the example of Christ, who loved you and gave himself as a sacrifice to take away your sins.” (Ephesians 5:2 NLT) “Whoever says he abides in Him ought [as a personal debt] to walk and conduct himself in the same way in which He walked and conducted Himself.” (1 John 2:6 Amplified) Also in the words of Jesus himself, “Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me. (John 15:4 NKJV)

An Oscar statuette is 92.5 % tin, 7.5% copper and plated in gold, costing about $200 to produce and is sought after constantly with fervent zeal, with absolute dedication, for a lifetime. How much more should we follow our profession to emulate our elder brother, Jesus Christ, and allow him to live in us? To put him on as a garment, to follow in his footsteps and live as he did.

Lord Jesus, please clothe us mightily each day so that we can live in your strength, your gentleness and in your love for others.
