Thy Word

“For as the rain and the snow comes down from the heavens and do not return there, except it waters the earth and make it bring forth and bud, and give seed to the sower and bread to the eater, so shall My Word be, which goes out of My mouth; it shall not return to Me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in what I sent it to do!”
Isaiah 55:10-11 (Literal Translation of the Holy Bible)

I’ve read these verses many a time and thought I understood them well enough. For surely it means that the Scriptures, which are God’s Word in written form, won’t return to Him void, they will have done all that God purposed for it. Well, I’m a bit slow on the uptake and, while my beliefs were correct up to a point, suddenly the penny dropped…

Doesn’t John say, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God… And the Word became flesh and tabernacled among us.”?! (John 1:1, 14). Silly Billy that I am, I hadn’t put two and two together, let alone got it to add up to four! Jesus is the Word.  And Jesus certainly went forth from God; and He certainly didn’t return to God void; and He definitely accomplished that which pleased God; and He definitely prospered in what He was sent to do!

How could I have missed such an obvious thing?! Maybe because I was learning other things, but even I think that I was rather slow on the uptake on that point. “But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask from God, who gives to all freely and with no reproach, and it will be given to him.” says James 1:5. I must remember that in future. But still, I love the way God pops things into my mind when I least expect it ~ often when I’m reading something I think I already understand.

With all this in mind I think our prayer for today should be:

Dear loving Father, surprise us please with more truths while we read Your written Word, especially when we think we have already understood it. We love to read the Bible, getting to know You more and more. So please, keep giving us the understanding and wisdom we need to do so. Thank you in Jesus Name.
Amen
