God Understands And Feels Our Grief

“Jesus understands every weakness of ours, because he was tempted in every way that we are.  But he did not sin!”
Hebrews 4:15 (CEV)

I have recently been asked to conduct two funerals; one was a friend and one was a close relative. At such tragic times people are drawn to think about what happens when we die—is it the end, or is there a future life?

They are also saddened by the loss of a loved one and can wonder if the eternal God can understand our grief. The answer is that God fully understands how we feel, through his own son, Jesus. In John chapter 11 we read that Lazarus, Jesus’ friend, had died after an illness. Jesus knew that he was going to raise Lazarus from the dead in order that his disciples might believe, but that did not prevent him showing his feelings. When Jesus arrived at the house and saw Lazarus, he wept—he actually cried and mourned just as we do when a loved one dies.

Jesus experienced death in his own body, but it was impossible for the grave to hold Him. He has conquered death, and we can look forward to seeing our loved ones again. Knowing God understands our feelings is a great comfort to us.

Father, we thank you that you sent your son, Jesus, to experience what we suffer, and that he is able to be our sympathetic High Priest.
