How God Speaks To Us

“Long ago God spoke many times and in many ways to our ancestors through the prophets.  And now in these final days, he has spoken to us through his son.”
Hebrews 1:1-2 (NLT)

God speaks to us in all sorts of ways, but chiefly through His Word.  2 Timothy 3:16-17 tells us, “All scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives.  It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right.  God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work.”

God has spoken through prophets (2 Peter 1:21), and prophecy is often about foretelling.  How you view the future has an affect on how you live in the present.  God has made prophecies in the Old Testaments that he fulfils in the New Testament.  He has revealed himself chiefly by speaking through Christ (Romans 10:17).  And then the apostles were his personal representatives with authority to speak in his name (Matthew 10:40-41 and John 13:20).

What has God said about himself?  That he has a plan to save man.  God is our teacher and he has appointed teachers in the Church.  It is our responsibility to listen with respect and to examine the scriptures to make sure what we hear is the truth.  That’s what the Bereans did, “…they listened eagerly to Paul’s message.  They searched the Scriptures day after day to see if Paul and Silas were teaching the truth.” (Acts 17:11).

The Thessalonians did the same thing.  Paul said in 1 Thessalonians 2:13, “…when you received this message from us, you didn’t think of our words as mere human ideas.  You accepted what we said as the very word of God—which, of course, it is.  And this word continues to work in you who believe.”

Paul says in 2 Timothy 2:7, “Think about what I am saying.  The Lord will help you understand all these things.”

God has given us three teachers, the Bible, the Holy Spirit, and the church, if only we will listen when God speaks to us.

Prayer
Thank you, Father, for giving us faithful teachers.  Please help us to always do what you tell us through them.
Amen
