Search Your Heart

“Tremble and do not sin; when you are on your beds, search your hearts and be silent.”
Psalm 4:4 (NIV)

At the start of each New Year, we hear of people making all sorts of resolutions many of which are impossible to keep.

Many years ago someone told me that it was important before falling asleep each night, to take a few moments to review my day. This, I was told, was the only way one would ever truly learn from one’s mistakes or triumphs.  I’d like to be able to say that I have faithfully followed this advice, but the truth is more sporadic than that.

However, after reading this verse I did think that it would be a very good belated New Year’s resolution to make. It could make a difference in our individual lives if we all did so.

The next verse says, “Offer the sacrifices of the righteous and trust in the Lord.”

If we take the time to reflect on our actions at the end of each day and then offer our lives as a living sacrifice (Romans 12:1) to God and trust in him, we can begin the process of transforming our lives one day (or night) at a time.

Dear Lord, help us to take the time to search our hearts in silence and resolve to present ourselves as living sacrifices to you every day.
