Changed By Prayer

“Create in me a clean heart, O God, And renew a steadfast spirit within me.”
Psalm 51:10 (NKJV)

This week is the Churches Together Week of Prayer for Christian Unity and the overall theme for this week in 2012 is Change.  Their booklet points out that change is at the heart of human life, change is at the heart of our Christian faith, and change is at the heart of the ecumenical movement.  So each day has its own theme for prayer, to bring us to Christian Unity, beginning with prayer and including waiting, suffering, struggling, peacemaking, loving, feeding, uniting.  The week began with a pulpit exchange; then each day during the week a different Church hosts an evening meeting for prayers on the days’ theme, followed by fellowship over refreshments.  On the final day, Sunday 28th January, all the churches are invited to unite for a ‘Songs of Praise’ style Service together.

The theme for Saturday, 21st January was ‘Changed by Prayer’.  Prayer changes you.  It takes our focus off ourselves and onto God.  It is by learning and following the ways of God that we become like him.  Prayer takes our focus off ourselves and onto those who are suffering and in need, which makes us more compassionate and caring.  Prayer takes our focus off ourselves and onto the things that are happening in the world so that we are stirred to action to set a better example and, in our turn, change the world for the better.

Hear our prayers, Father in Heaven, and help us through them to become more like you.  Give us hearts of compassion and change us through our Christian life.
