Whose Are You?

And you are among those who are called to belong to Jesus.”
Romans 1:6 (NIV UK)

“I don’t know who I am anymore.”

The man was going through a life crisis. He doubted his sense of purpose and direction in life. He felt disoriented, ungrounded, lost. Maybe we all feel like this from time to time. Psychologists and therapists advise that sometimes we need to re-establish our feelings of personal identity, to work out who we are and where we are going. Get comfortable with ourselves, some might suggest, so we can sing boldly songs like “I am who I am”.

The early Christians lived in a society where people embraced and identified themselves with lifestyles, causes and beliefs. It was similar to how things are today. Paul was anxious lest believers got caught up in the confusion of it all. To Paul the question was not “who am I?” but “whose am I? Therefore he re-assured the Roman church that they are called to belong to Christ. In other words, that is what life is about. Life is about belonging to Jesus.

Knowing that we belong to Jesus can take the pressure off us emotionally and psychologically. We can relax, knowing that Jesus is ours, and we are his.

Let’s allow this thought to sink into our hearts and to permeate our thinking in 2012.

You belong to Jesus!

Thank you, Jesus, that in you I can find purpose and direction in life. Thank you that you are mine, and I am yours.
