God’s Perfect Timing

“But when the fullness of the time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, that we might receive the adoption as sons.”
Galatians 4:4-5 (NKJV)

Have you ever wondered why God waited thousands of years in human experience before he sent his Son to be born in humble circumstances in the town of Bethlehem? He could have sent Jesus in the days of Noah, or during the lifetimes of Joshua, David, Solomon, Isaiah or Jeremiah. But it wasn’t until hundreds of years after the deaths of these prophets that Jesus was born of Mary, in the land of Palestine.

Only God knows the precise timing for everything he undertakes to do in his divine plan for humanity, but sometimes physical circumstances can give us a hint to his timing.

For example, Jesus was born around 4 BC when the Roman Empire controlled many countries including the Middle East. Providing each country submitted to Roman rule and taxation, Rome was generally happy, and history tells us that there was reasonable stability across the empire. The Roman Emperors spent huge amounts of money building roads, temples, palaces, amphitheatres and fresh water systems, etcetera. The stage had been set for the coming of the Messiah.

The Romans even permitted freedom of religion for the Jews so long as they paid higher taxes for the privilege. This freedom gave Jesus and his disciples the opportunity to travel widely throughout the land preaching the Good News of God’s Kingdom. The paved roads throughout the empire made travel much easier for the apostles also, as they would later carry the gospel to the Gentile World.

Another major plus during the first century was the use of a common language, and that language was Greek. Most people could understand some Greek, and this made the task of communicating the Good News of Jesus Christ much easier.

God in his infinite wisdom chose the perfect time in history for the birth of his Son, Jesus. His timing for each of us, his children, is also perfect as we accept the now glorified Jesus as Lord and Saviour of our lives.

Thank you, Father, for giving the wonderful gift of Your Son to a spiritually lost world two thousand years ago. Your timing was perfect for his appearing then, and it is perfect today in Your great plan for us, individually. In Jesus name.
