The Greatest Gift

“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”
John 3:16 (NIV)

For young children Christmas is an exciting time of year. My two grandsons, age 8 and 6, both have a long list of the presents they would like to get. No doubt many other youngsters have one too. For many people Christmas is all about the presents they have to buy and the ones they will receive. All our retailers step up their advertising and displays to grab the maximum share of our Christmas spending.

There is no doubt that it is nice to give and receive gifts at this time of year. But I hope we can also remember that there is one gift which has never been sold in any shop, that has a greater value than anything we could buy.

At this time of year we should remember and be aware of the birth of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. But we should also remember why he was born. He was born to die—to die as a sacrifice to pay the penalty for our sins. It is a personal and individual sacrifice for each and every human being who is alive today, has ever lived or will ever live.

For each of us it is the greatest gift we could ever receive, his life for our life. Today not everyone grasps or understands or accepts that gift. But it has been given for us because of the love God has for us, his creation, his children.

It is the gift that keeps on giving and one we will appreciate for all eternity.

Our loving and Gracious Father, thank for giving your son to pay the penalty for my sins and opening the way for us to have eternal life. May every human being come to know you and appreciate the greatest gift we have ever been given.
