Brotherly Love 10 – A Blessing To Others

The Tenth of a Series

“Finally, all of you should be of one mind.  Sympathize with each other.  Love each other as brothers and sisters.  Be tenderhearted, and keep a humble attitude.  Don’t repay evil for evil.  Don’t retaliate with insults when people insult you.  Instead, pay them back with a blessing.  That is what God has called you to do, and he will bless you for it.”
1 Peter 3:8 (NLT)

Have you ever thought of yourself like a ship?  Probably not.  But in a sense it is true.  We all leave a wake where we have been.  There is in our wake a record of the impact we had on someone’s life.  It might be embarrassing to sift through our wake to see what that impact was or it might be quite a delightful experience.  But, you know, the wake is not to be judged by us but by those we leave in it.

What is the effect we leave behind as we make our way through life?

God has given us everything that we have, he is the source of everything, and he is by nature a source of blessing.  Every encounter with God is beneficial even when we can’t see it immediately.  God revealed himself in Jesus so that we could better understand who he is and in so doing left us an example of how he would have us live.  The entirety of Jesus’ life was a blessing to those he met and ultimately for all mankind.  Even when he had harsh things to say they were always a source of blessing if the hearer would heed them.  His whole motivation was to bless, to leave a positive wake, as he made his way through life.  This didn’t happen automatically, as if he had no control over it, it happened because it was his intention.  He determined to be a blessing to one and all and every opportunity was taken.

Many times in each day we have the same opportunity.  Sadly, often these opportunities are not taken.  Frequently this is because we don’t see them and that is because we are not looking for them.  We have not set a purpose in our day to be a blessing to those we meet.

But the good news is, today is a new day, a new beginning.  In fact it is the first day of the rest of our lives.  Isn’t it wonderful to wake each morning to a new chance to start afresh?

Let’s grasp this wonderful blessing from God and make this a day of blessing to all we meet.

Father in heaven, thank you that you are a God who delights in blessing us.  Let me reflect that wonderful quality in my life today and leave in my wake people who have been blessed by my presence in their life.
