In The Image Of God

“The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel that displays the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.”
2 Corinthians 4:4 (NIV)

At the very beginning of the Bible, God stated the purpose for creating mankind. Humans are to become like God (Genesis 1:26). As the children of God, they are to act and behave the way God acts and behaves. God is love (1 John 4:8, 16). Love is the greatest power in the universe. We are instructed in the Bible to love God with all our heart, soul and mind and to love our neighbour as ourselves—to love one another as Christ has loved us. Even to love our enemies!

“God saw all that he had made [including humans], and it was very good.” (Genesis 1:31). By creating humanity, God started a good work in us, and he has promised to complete it by forming in each of us the very image of Christ. “My dear children, for whom I am again in the pains of childbirth until Christ is formed in you,” (Galatians 4:19). Christ in us is our only hope of glory (Colossians 1:27).

As stated in the anchor scripture above, Christ is the image of God, and it is Christ who is being formed in us, which means that we also will possess the very image of God as stated in Genesis. “and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator” (Colossians 3:10).

Jesus said his Father is always at his work (John 5:17). We are the work of the Father’s hand. He is the One who is forming us into the very image of his Son. “Yet you, LORD, are our Father. We are the clay, you are the potter; we are all the work of your hand.” (Isaiah 64:8).

Prayer
Creator God, as clay in your hand, please help me to be malleable and to humble myself under your mighty hand as you form Christ in me, the hope of glory.
Amen
