When We Can’t See Our Way Through

“For He Himself has said, ‘I will never leave you nor forsake you.’”
Hebrews 13:5

I suppose it is impossible to go through life without experiencing some of the hardships and troubles that life brings with it.  Sometimes these can be almost impossible to bear.  Life does not seem to be fair at times.

Why is it so?  We wish we knew.  There are so many imponderables that plague us and cause us to wonder what it is all about.  Of course there is nothing new about these things—they have troubled mankind throughout history.  They are, for the moment, past finding out.

But where we don’t have knowledge, God has given us something instead—this we call faith.  Faith is what we have when we don’t have full understanding or when we don’t have sight of something.  When God gives us faith we can have confidence in what that something is, even when we can’t see it or grasp it, either physically or in our mind’s eye.

When we face trials and troubles, God gives us faith that we are not alone in bearing them.  Where does this faith come from? It comes from hearing God’s word.  When God, who cannot lie, says something, it is as good as done.  What does God say to us about our times of trouble?  The Apostle Paul tells us in 1 Corinthians 10:13, “No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.”

This is supported and clarified for us by Moses and quoted by the author of the Epistle to the Hebrews.  Notice what Moses says:  “Be strong and of good courage, do not fear nor be afraid of them; for the LORD your God, He is the one who goes with you.  He will not leave you nor forsake you…And the LORD, he is the One who goes before you.  He will be with you, he will not leave you nor forsake you; do not fear nor be dismayed.” (Deuteronomy 31:6, 8.)

No matter what it is we have to face, or where it is we have to go, we do not do it alone.  In fact, God is waiting for us there already.  He has gone on ahead to prepare for us the way of escape.

Let’s grasp this faith that God offers us and boldly face, with confidence, whatever it is that life throws at us.

Father in heaven, thank you for the gift of faith that assures us that you are always there with us to comfort, strengthen and deliver us as we face the trials and troubles of life.
