Make A Joyful Noise Unto The Lord

“Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth.  Worship the Lord with gladness; come before him with joyful songs.  Know that the Lord is God.  It is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people, the sheep of his pasture.”
Psalm 100:1-3 (NIV)

This is quoted from a Psalm of Thanksgiving.  The writer considers that we are God’s creation and that we did not have a part in our making;  that we are his people and the sheep of his pasture.

God describes himself as the good shepherd–the kind of shepherd that cares for his sheep, protecting and providing them with all their needs.  He is the shepherd who leaves the 99 and goes after the one.  This shepherd laid down his life for his sheep and took it up again, that he could continue to be the good shepherd, not willing to entrust the care of his sheep to anyone else.

This good shepherd is none other than Almighty God, the one true God, omnipotent, omniscient, omnipresent, eternal and all caring, all merciful, and all vigilant toward his sheep.

What a wonderful shepherd we have watching over us.  Not a hair of our head falls to the earth that he doesn’t see.  A shepherd that stays with us through thick and thin, ever present to comfort and encourage no matter what the trial.  The great shepherd who leads us to his promised rest.

Is it any wonder that the psalmist shouted for joy as he considered this awesome truth?  Is it any wonder that he called all the earth to rejoice with him, since this shepherd cares for all the earth and all on the earth in this same way?

Father in heaven, let my life be a shout of joy for the wonder of your great love for me and all things on earth, for the overarching care that leads me ever onward to your great Kingdom, the promised rest.
