Roaring Lion

“Be sober, be vigilant, because your adversary the devil walks around like a roaring lion seeking whom he may devour. Resist him, steadfast in the faith, know that this same sufferings are experienced by your brotherhood in the world.”
1 Peter 5:8-9 (NKJV 2007 version)

In 1999, my wife and I along with some of her relatives, went to Johannesburg in South Africa. We stayed with a maternal uncle, and visited many exciting places.  One of these was a Safari Park. One day we packed ourselves into two cars and arrived at our destination where we saw many lions and lionesses with their cubs. There were warnings not to come out of the cars.

It was a tremendous opportunity to come face to face with the Kings of the Forest, hearing their thunderous roars. I have seen lions at a close range behind bars in the zoo, but now we were in their natural environment with them freely roaming about.

Lo and behold, our car engine stalled! All we could do was gaze at this pride of lions, not far from us. Eventually we started the engine and slowly edged our way out, to our great relief.

This unique incident reminds me of several stories in the bible—King David and Samson killing lions bare-handed. Also the story of Daniel in the lion’s den, when an angel of God delivered him from the hungry lions.

Christians have a spiritual enemy, Satan, who, like a roaring lion is prowling to attack us. James 4:7 says, “Therefore submit to God. Resist the Devil and he will flee from you.” We also read that God never leaves or forsakes his children and has provided spiritual armour to stand up against this powerful enemy (Ephesians 6:10-18). We do not need to be afraid, but we do need to be on guard always, for our enemy is prowling, seeking his prey.

Father in Heaven, we thank you for your protection every day from the wicked one, Satan the Devil, the roaring lion.
