How Much?

“…Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine.”
Isaiah 43:1 (NRSV)

It’s amazing just how much people will pay for items, no matter how old and worn they are, if they once belonged to someone famous.

For example, Napoleon’s toothbrush sold for $21,000; Hitler’s car for $150,000; a lock of Elvis’ hair £11,000 and recently Winston Churchill’s false teeth fetched £15,000! As you can see it’s not because these things are worth anything at all; but merely because they once belonged to someone who is looked upon as significant in world history.

Christians are very ordinary people and yet we are looked upon as being of great value by God. Because we belong to him, we have taken on a new value; a new and precious status as children of the great God. That’s who we are and as such, very precious to our Father; we have gained a new life in Jesus Christ, a new relationship with him and the Father, and that has become our new identity. Never allow yourself to diminish that value. We tend to expect more of ourselves than God does, and subsequently we think less of ourselves than He does. In fact, we put ourselves down and look at our lives as worthless, but that just isn’t so!

The Apostle Peter tells God’s people in his first letter: “…for you are a chosen people. You are a kingdom of priests, God’s holy nation, his very own possession. This is so you can show others the goodness of God, for He called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.” (1 Peter 2:9 NLT). Notice also this thought, which Jesus shared with his disciples just before he sent them out to preach the Kingdom, heal the sick, raise the dead, cure the lepers and cast out devils. (Matthew 10:5-8 Phillips). Then in verse 29 he says; “Two sparrows sell for a farthing, don’t they? Yet not a single sparrow falls to the ground without your Father’s knowledge. The very hairs of your head are all numbered. Never be afraid, then—you are far more valuable than sparrows.”

Some years ago someone gave me a little printed card, which said:
I asked Jesus; “How much do you love me?”
He stretched his arms out wide and said “This much!”
And then He died.

God set our value a long, long time ago. Before we existed God decided we were worth the sacrifice and death of Jesus Christ. That’s what we’re worth; the value has been set and nothing can change it. Thank God!

Great Father, illuminate the eyes of our hearts that we might come to see just how very precious we are to you and live our lives in that light.
