Power To The Christian!

“Now these things became our examples, to the intent that we should not lust after evil things as they also lusted.”
1 Corinthians 10:6 (NKJV)

I woke up as usual and stretched out to turn on the light. Nothing happened. A power cut. Now I needed to see whether my neighbours had lights on or not. They did. So it was me.

I rang the emergency number and was told it was an area fault. Only it wasn’t. No power all day; mine is an all-electric house. So to bed by candlelight. I rang the emergency number again the next morning. This time they agreed the problem was at my end. And within four hours the engineers had come and restored my power. It was an old and tired master fuse that had been at fault.

Without power I had been pretty much helpless. I couldn’t cook anything. I had no heating, no lighting. Worst of all – no tea! My computers didn’t work. Internet was off. Emails were impossible. Other work I needed to do using the computers was impossible. It was pretty much a wasted day.

And that’s how Christians are, or would be, without the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit to empower them. Jesus said that without the Father he could do nothing (John 5:30). And later he promised that Christians would be endued with power from on high (Luke 24:49). Today the Christian is like a home without electricity when the Holy Spirit is allowed to sap away due to neglect or the cares of the world crowding him out.

Prayer
Most merciful Father, thank you that you don’t leave us to rely on our own strength. You know that left to our own resources we can do nothing worthwhile, but in your mercy you provide us with all spiritual power through the Holy Spirit that you have given to us through Jesus Christ, in whose name we pray.
Amen
