Praising God With The Angels

“And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly hosts, praising God and saying, ‘Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace among those whom he favours!’”
Luke 2:13-14 (NRSV)

We all know the story of the angels appearing to the shepherds and announcing the birth of the Saviour of the world. But did we know that the Bible has only three recorded instances of the heavenly hosts praising God?

The first is at the creation of the world. God challenges Job saying, “Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth … when the morning stars sang together and all the heavenly beings shouted for joy?” (Job 38:4, 7)

The final recorded instance will be at the return of Jesus. John records what he saw and heard in a vision: “Then I heard what seemed to be the voice of a great multitude …crying out, ‘Hallelujah! For the Lord our God the Almighty reigns.   Let us rejoice and exult and give him the glory…’” (Revelation19:6-7)

There may, of course, be other instances of the angelic hosts praising God, but they have not been recorded for us. The birth of Jesus initiated the ushering in of God’s new welcoming relationship with mankind.

Three key stages in the working out of God’s plan! How appropriate then that we should join with the angelic chorus in lifting up our voices in praise to God for the birth of his Son.

Father, thank you for Jesus. Thank you for that tremendous event in history when he, the Word, became flesh, lived as one of us, and finally was crucified and resurrected. We join with the heavenly hosts in praising you.
