Every Spiritual Blessing

“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ.”
Ephesians 1:3 (NIV)

A well known hymn encourages us to count our blessings, and name them one by one. When we sing this hymn we often think in terms of physical blessings for which we are thankful. It may be a loving family, a happy marriage, good health, the abundance of food and clean water, a beautiful and peaceful environment, employment, etc. These are things that we should not take for granted and be always thankful for. Not everyone is a recipient of such blessings. It often depends in which era we live, and the nation in which we live.

We all are the recipients of every spiritual blessing in Christ as stated in the anchor scripture above, the forgiveness of sins (Ephesians 1:7), freedom in Christ (Galatians 5:1), lavished with God’s love and grace (1 John 3:1; Ephesians 1:7-8), the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22), adoption into the very family of God (Ephesians 1:5) and eternal life (1 John 5:11-13).

These are things that money cannot buy and does not depend in which era we live or the nation in which we live. “Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows” (James 1:17). During this Advent season with the giving and receiving of gifts let us consider the fact that Jesus has secured every spiritual blessing for us, our trust is in him and to him we are eternally thankful.

Thank you, Father, for sending your Son, our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, who has secured for us every spiritual blessing.
