We Are Family

“For this reason I kneel before the Father, from whom his whole family in heaven and on earth derives its name.”
Ephesians 3:14-15 (NIV)

God is not a family! We do not worship a family of gods. The Father, the Son and the Spirit are one God. Both the old and new testament are emphatic that God is one. Deuteronomy 6:4 says, “Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.” And Jesus quoted this in Mark 12:29: “‘The most important one’, answered Jesus, ‘Is this: Hear, O Israel, The Lord our God, the Lord is one.’”

However, God has a family into which we have been adopted and called the children of God. We read in Romans 8:15, “For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship. And by Him we cry, ‘Abba, Father.’ The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children.”

God is our Father. We are His children. It is a family relationship. We are family. And that is why we are instructed to love one another.

Spiritually speaking, we also have a mother! Galatians 4:26 tells us, “But the Jerusalem that is above is free, and she is our mother.”

God has designed the world in such a way that we live in family units. He is not a family, but has an ever-expanding family.

Father, thank you for placing me into your loving family as one of your children.  Help me to love my brothers and sisters in Christ, as you have loved me.
