The Weather Man

“And when he was entered into a ship, his disciples followed him.  And, behold, there arose a great tempest in the sea, insomuch that the ship was covered with the waves: but he was asleep.  And his disciples came to him, and awoke him, saying, Lord, save us: we perish.  And he saith unto them, Why are ye fearful, O ye of little faith? Then he arose, and rebuked the winds and the sea; and there was a great calm.  But the men marvelled, saying, What manner of man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey him!”
Matthew 8:23-27 (KJV)

Christ Jesus, Our Lord and Saviour, demonstrated His rulership over the elements and that Jesus is Lord. “For he commandeth, and raiseth the stormy wind, which lifteth up the waves thereof…He maketh the storm a calm, so that the waves thereof are still…Oh that men would praise the LORD for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men!” (Psalm 107: 25, 29, 31)

As much of the UK grinds to a halt under a few inches of beautiful snow, it is worth considering the following points.

God is still sovereign over the elements. The stormy wind fulfils His word. He sends the lightning and the rain, hail and snow as attested to by Job and the psalmists.

God, The Master Forecaster, declares the end from the beginning – and makes it happen! He does not sit anxiously in front of the TV awaiting weather presenters to give the forecast so He can plan His operations for the week ahead!

Like other national weather services, the Met Office can only get the forecast right within the limits set by the Son of God who upholds “all things by the word of His power” (Hebrews 1:3).

Prayer
Great God Our Creator, thank you because you are in charge of your creation, including the weather. Thank you for the rain, sunshine and snow. Help us to marvel at Your greatness and majesty and not to slip down on the ice! Through the Almighty name of Jesus we pray.
Amen.
