The Face Of Compassion

“When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them because they were confused and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. He said to his disciples, ‘The harvest is great, but the workers are few. So pray to the Lord who is in charge of the harvest; ask him to send more workers into his fields.’”
Matthew 9:36-38 (NLT)

Looking through all four gospels, you can count several times where it says that Jesus was moved with compassion. I wish I could have seen his face when he was in that state. To see the face of the One who came to die because of his compassion for people. To see the pain in his face when he saw his children in pain, to see the tears of joy in his eyes when he saw the smiles of his children. I can only imagine the others who (driven by this compassion) helped the needy and covered the wounds of the afflicted. How amazing it would be on the receiving end of compassion from the King. No wonder Jesus’ ministry was so effective. He changed lives because His life’s purpose was to see lives changed.

He saw people as orphans looking for their father…the wounded looking for their healer. He didn’t see them as they were physically, but He saw their hearts. They were lost sheep looking for a shepherd. He felt similar to the way you feel when you see a homeless kid on the streets or an orphan on TV. “If there were only something I could do to help.” Well there was something He could do to help, so he did it. He couldn’t help himself. He was doing what he came to earth to do. He came to meet needs. Now He is calling you to do the same.

He says, “The harvest is great, but the workers are few. So pray to the Lord who is in charge of the harvest; ask him to send more workers into his fields.” GO! That’s what He is saying. He has called us all—He wants workers—evangelists, Pastors, youth workers, food shelter volunteers, missionaries!! If you are not doing something to benefit the Kingdom of God, you are hurting it. We are called to go and in our going, witness. Go to class, go to work, go down the street, across the street, to the next town or county, or overseas, I don’t care, but wherever you go, spread the gospel.

Preaching Jesus Christ inside the church is great, but the people in church already know about Him; that’s why they’re there. People are crying out in the streets, but we are not in the streets. Let’s get out there and see peoples lives changed.

Dear Lord, help me to overcome my fears and inhibitions and to represent you wherever I go.
