The Word Was, Is, And Is To Come

“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”
Psalm 119:105 (AMP)

The Beatles Bible, The Bible of Sport, The Cook’s Bible of Ingredients, The Bible of Mathematics, Men’s Health Bible, etc. There seems to be a ‘Bible’ on just about every subject going. This is because people use the word ‘Bible’ to mean the ‘last word’ on a given subject. It has the final say—nothing can supersede it. It is the be all and end all.

Sadly though, many people might make that connection in their minds but may never actually pick up a Bible and read it to see just how right they are.

There is only one Bible and it does have the last word, it is the book that supersedes any other and it does have the final say. The reason is that “all scripture is God-breathed (2 Timothy 3:16-17 NIV).

We may ourselves, as Christians, look to other sources—theology books, Bible commentaries, poetry about the word of God, songs lifted from scripture—these are all good and can be of great help, but we must remember that these things are only a shadow of the Bible itself and cannot replace the importance of spending time in the scriptures and reading God’s word first hand, for ourselves.

God will speak to us through the Bible and so all we need to do is find a quiet place, open with prayer and start reading. Let the words sink in, reflect on them, listen for God’s own commentary. Remember Hebrews 4:12: “For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.

As the line of a worship song puts it, ‘The Word was, the Word is and the Word will be’.

How true.

‘Father, as we read your word let us remember that it is of you and it is the handbook for life. Speak to us through your Holy Bible. We await your instruction.
