Faith Is Precious

“To those who through the righteousness of the our God and Saviour Jesus Christ have received a faith as precious as ours”
2 Peter 1:1 (NIV)

The word “precious” implies something to be treasured, of high value, rare and beautiful. Peter says our faith is precious.

He also points out to his readers that faith is received. In Ephesians 2:8 Paul calls faith “the gift of God”. It is not a feeling or an emotion or a belief that we work up or produce of our own accord. Faith in Jesus Christ is something wonderful that we accept from God.

In addition Peter explains that faith is received through the righteousness of Jesus. In other words it was not because we were good that God offered us the gift of faith. It had nothing to do with our actions or thoughts or attitude. It was because Jesus was righteous. He is righteous for us. Righteousness comes from God “through faith in Christ Jesus to all who believe” (Romans 3:22).

What a difference a verse makes. This one little verse tells us a lot. It reminds us that faith is received from God, it is given because of the righteousness of Christ, and it is precious.

The verse also tells us something else. This gracious gift of faith is “ours”. We are not living it in isolation, but we live the life of faith together side by side because we “belong to the family of believers” (Galatians 6:10).

Let’s rejoice that we “have received a faith as precious as ours”.

Wonderful Father, thank you for the gift of faith, that we have received through the righteousness of Christ, and help me to treasure this precious gift. In Jesus’ name.
