Stress And A Glass Of Water

“Come unto me, all you who labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”
Matthew 11:28-30 (KJV)

If you are holding a glass of water it doesn’t seem that heavy, but the longer you hold it, the heavier it seems to become. If you hold it for a few minutes this is no problem. If you hold it for an hour, your arm may begin to ache. If you hold it for a whole day, you may need physiotherapy!

And so it is with our burdens. We can carry them for a short time, but if we try to carry them for long periods, they become so heavy that we struggle and then fall beneath their weight.

There is a saying that “A burden shared is a burden halved”. A friend can share our burden and help us carry or solve it. Our greatest friend is Jesus.

In Mendelssohn’s Elijah there is a song “Cast your burdens upon the Lord, and he will sustain thee” taken from the scriptures in Psalm 55.

We can trust in God to guide and help us in every difficulty. Jesus says, “Come unto me, all you who labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”

 Prayer
Help me Lord, to bring my burdens to you in prayer and to leave them there instead of trying to take them back up and carry them everywhere. Let me find true rest in you.
Amen
