Work Together

8th in a series based on 3 John

“…we may work together for the truth…”
3 John 8 (NIV)

Togetherness is a major focus in the Bible.

Believers are “sharers together in the promise in Christ Jesus” (Ephesians 3:6), and are bound “together in perfect unity” through love (Colossians 3:14). They “are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by his Spirit” (Ephesians 2:22). They are called to participate in the fellowship of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit (1 John 1:3, Philippians 2:1).

John is anxious that believers work together for the truth. Work implies active effort and support. This does not always happen in Christianity today where the cross of Christ is shattered into splinter groups and churches, each with their own theories and points of view. To the outside world Christians seem divided, not together.

What can we do about it? Perhaps John would have said don’t let divisions get in the way of the work of spreading the truth of the gospel. Sadly, Christians are divided as to what the gospel is, of course. They were also divided in John and Paul’s day. Paul wrote of people turning to “a different gospel” (Galatians 1:6).

So, once again, what should we do? Wherever you are, whatever denomination you are part of, whatever congregation you attend, as John says, “work together for the truth”.  Let the love of Christ Jesus in us transcend the differences of opinion to bring us together in perfect unity in the body of Christ.

Come together in Christ and in his gospel.

Heavenly Father, help our church to work together for the truth. In Jesus’ name.
