The Pioneer Of Our Salvation

“Looking to Jesus the pioneer and perfecter of our faith, who for the sake of the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, disregarding its shame, and has taken his seat at the right hand of the throne of God.”
Hebrews 12:2 (NRSV)

A pioneer is one who opens up a way, a trail for others to follow.

If we think about the United States and consider the trails that were blazed across that land, especially to the West; there’s the Chisholm Trail, the Santa Fe Trail and the Oregon Trail, to name but a few. These ways across the wilderness were forged in blood, sweat and tears; brought about by great sacrifice—many times at the cost of the lives of those who were courageous enough to try. It involved finding the best places to cross the many rivers, locating the waterholes in the deserts and in the case of the Oregon Trail, (which is 2000 miles long beginning in Missouri and ending in Salem, Oregon) meant finding a way to cross the awesome Rocky Mountains! These hardy pioneers suffered for months, sometimes years, and travelled for thousands of miles to make it easy for those who would come later to follow their trail.

We human beings also have a Pioneer, one who came to open up a way to the Father, who came to remove all the obstacles that separated us from Him. One who actually became The Way, The path, The trail that leads to God, to our Heavenly Father. Jesus tells us in John 14:6 that He is “The way, the truth and the life.” He uses the words “truth” and “life” to describe the kind of way that He is. In other words; “I am the true and living way (Trail) that leads to life.” This is the One who gave his all for us, who suffered and died to blaze that trail, so that we could journey to the Father and to the Kingdom of God. Those who travelled the trails West in the United States called their journeys end “The Promised Land”—the land of their dreams, the goal of their life, despite the rigours, trials and sufferings along the way. They had vision, hope, faith and a trail to follow! And so have we!

Again, as the writer to the Hebrews puts it, “And so dear brothers and sisters, we can boldly enter heaven’s Most Holy Place because of the blood of Jesus. This is the new, life-giving way that Christ has opened up for us through the sacred curtain, by means of His death for us.” (Hebrews 10:19-20 NLT).

Lord, thank you for being willing to suffer and die to establish a Way to the Father for us; removing all the obstacles and blazing a Trail that is True and Living, a way that we can find in you.
