A Father’s Advice

“While He was still speaking, a bright cloud enveloped them, and a voice from the cloud said, ‘This is My Son, whom I love; with Him I am well pleased. Listen to Him!’”
Matthew 17:5 (NIV)

In the world of today, there are many voices competing for our attention. Some are advertisers who use the radio, television, cinema screens and the internet to grab our attention for the purpose of selling their products or services. These voices do not necessarily harm our spiritual lives. They are part and parcel of the commercial world in which we live today.

Generally speaking, human fathers give their children what they consider to be good advice. God is the Father of our spirits as it says in Hebrews 12:9, “Moreover, we have all had human fathers who disciplined us and we respected them for it. How much more should we submit to the Father of our spirits and live!” And He cares about each of us, sending His Son to instruct us how to live and advising us to ‘listen to Him’ as shown in the scripture above. Long before the birth of Jesus, Moses also advised us to listen to Him. “The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your brothers. You must listen to him.” (Deuteronomy 18:15).

If we do not listen to Jesus, then by default we will hear another voice, which is responsible for deceiving the world. Revelation 12:9 tells us that Satan leads the whole world astray. We listen to Jesus because the words we hear from Him come from the Father (John 14:24). Jesus said in John 10:27, “My sheep listen to My voice; I know them, and they follow Me.”

Heavenly Father, please help me to heed Your advice and listen to Jesus, for His words are Your words, they are spirit and they are life.
