The Solid Rock

“The Lord is my Rock, my fortress and my Saviour; my God is my Rock in whom I find protection.”

Psalm 18:2 (NLT)

In a time when the kingdoms of this world are being shaken, we Christians can be thankful that we belong to a kingdom whose foundations can never be moved.

God tells us to be what He is like and likens Himself to certain things to help us and show us what He is like. A rock is one of those things. Hannah knew this because she praised God and said, “neither is there any Rock like our God” (1 Samuel 2:2 KJV).

And in Psalm 31:2-3, David said, “…be you my strong rock”, and “…you are my rock and my fortress.”

1 Corinthians 10:4 (KJV) tells us the Israelites drank from the spiritual Rock that travelled with them, “and that Rock was Christ.”

Jesus referred to Himself as, “the stone that the builders rejected has now become the cornerstone” (Mark 12:10 NLT, Psalm 118:22).

The cornerstone was used as a base to make sure other stones were straight and level. Jesus’ life was the base of the Church for us to follow the straight and level path. We are involved in a life-long building operation, but we don’t build the foundation that is given to us, that is, Jesus Christ. He is the Rock, the only real and lasting foundation.

When Jesus met Simon, he changed his name to Peter which means rock, and, although Peter wasn’t much like a rock to start with, he went on to become a great leader—the rock on which Jesus would build his Church.

1 Peter 2:4-5 says Christ is the foundation (the living stone) of God’s temple, and we are to be living stones that God is building into His spiritual temple.

Whatever happens in this world, Christ remains forever changeless. If we trust Him, we are absolutely secure because we stand on the firmest foundation in the universe. “Trust in the Lord always; for the Lord God is the eternal Rock.” (Isaiah 26:4 NLT).

Prayer

Thank you so much, Father, that you have shown us how to build our lives. Please help me to follow your teaching and build my house on the solid rock of your work.

Amen
