In The Crook of His Arm

“He tends his flock like a shepherd: He gathers the lambs in his arms and carries them close to his heart; he gently leads those that have young.”
Isaiah 40:11 (NIV)

We all like to record happy memories. I have a collage of photographs in my bedroom of my late husband and I attending various joyous events over the years.  There we stand with big smiles savouring the moment.  The collage has been hanging on the wall for three years, but it was only recently that I realised in each photograph my husband has his arm round me in a protective and affectionate stance. Of course, this touched my heart, but it also made me think of how our Saviour carries us in the crook of his arm.

Jesus tells us several times in John 10 “I am the good shepherd.”  Any shepherd worth his salt cares for every single one of his flock.  He picks the weak and weary up and carries them in the crook of his arm.  The very staff that he uses is called a crook.  The curved handle is intended to retrieve sheep that have gone astray and become ensnared—with it the shepherd will rescue that sheep and return it to the fold.  We are so blessed to know our Good Shepherd and for Him to know us.

My collage of photographs does not make me sad – instead I am reminded of the promise my Good Shepherd made to all of us who believe: “I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand” (John 10:28). To be loved and nourished by the Good Shepherd forever is something wonderful to hold on to.  Let us stay in the crook of His arm.

Wonderful Saviour, we thank you for your constant care of us – the undeserving.  It is so comforting and reassuring to know that you do carry us when we need to be carried. We pray thy kingdom come when the entire world will share this blessing.
