Standing on a Promise

“Nathan reported to David all the words of this entire revelation.”
2 Samuel 7:17 (NIV)

David is mentioned around a thousand times in the Bible. Only Jesus is mentioned more frequently. Through his life we see David’s passion, bravery, foolishness, talent, wisdom and much more. In this one biblical character we see the best and worst in human nature. Whatever David did, he was wholehearted. One of his heart’s desires was to build a house for the Lord because, “Here I am, living in a house of cedar, while the ark of God remains in a tent” (2 Samuel 7:2). However, God said “no”.

But in saying “no” to David, God gives him encouragement and an incredible promise. God reminds him of his origins as a humble shepherd but now a king surrounded with peace. Then the promise that “Your house and your kingdom will endure forever before me; your throne will be established forever” (verse 16). David offers praise and worships God in a spirit of real appreciation.

About a thousand years later the reality of that promise was fulfilled in the birth of Christ, the one we now adore. The Prophet Nathan shared God’s word with King David and the angel Gabriel confirmed that word to Jesus’ mother, Mary. “The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David…his kingdom will never end” (Luke 1:32-33). Mary, like David, was overwhelmed and humbled by a generous and gracious God.

Whether in the field or a palace, God sees us. If young or old, God hears us as we express the desires of our heart. Irrespective of our gender, female or male, God knows exactly how to deal with us as a loving parent. Like David and Mary, share your dreams, thoughts and troubles with God and let’s see what awesome things God has in store for us.

Prayer
Sovereign Lord, thank you for the blessings you have given and for those yet ahead. Through your Spirit inspire our words, thoughts and deeds. We pray in Jesus’ name.
Amen
