Encourage Each Other

“Your love has given me great joy and encouragement, because you, brother, have refreshed the hearts of the Lord’s people.”
Philemon 1:7 (NIV)

Day by Day articles come in all shapes and sizes (though usually about 500 words!).  They vary in subject matter and range of authorship and they help to teach us, guide us and, very importantly, encourage us. They are written by believers who have spent time in prayer, study and reflection talking to God. That’s encouraging.

I am amazed and get a real buzz when they ‘hit the nail on the head,’ so to speak, for me personally. It is amazing the number of times I read what is written and the words speak to me, move, help and/or encourage me. It defies logic when this occurs but so do God and the atoning sacrifice of Jesus. To the human mind God defies our selfish logic.

Encouragement is mentioned many times in scripture: for example, in Acts 20:1-2, “Paul sent for the disciples and, after encouraging them, said goodbye and set out for Macedonia. He travelled through that area, speaking many words of encouragement to the people.” Also in 11:23 we read, “When he arrived and saw what the grace of God had done, he was glad and encouraged them all to remain true to the Lord with all their hearts.” Another time states that. “After Paul and Silas came out of the prison, they went to Lydia’s house, where they met with the brothers and sisters and encouraged them” (Acts 16:40).

Let’s face it, we all need encouragement – sometimes more than others. We all have trials and troubles which come in many different forms.  They may be age, health, financial, social, family and emotional, or faith, conviction and belief issues. You name it, someone will likely be grieved by it. We need to help and encourage each other. We need to say the right words and do the right thing at the appropriate time. Life can be tricky.

After reading each Day by Day, I scroll down to see the author’s name and offer a little prayer of thanks and wellbeing for them. Following the model of the apostle Paul “I thank my God every time I remember you. In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy because of your partnership in the gospel…being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion…” (Philippians 1:3-6).

It’s encouraging that there are fellow believers out there. We can pray for the writing, for inspiration and for the writer’s walk with God. In Romans 15:5 it says, “May the God who gives endurance and encouragement give you the same attitude of mind toward each other that Christ Jesus had.” There it’s done, written, this Day by Day. Thank you Lord God Almighty. Thank you for encouraging me.

Father in Heaven, we pray and give thanks that you do continually provide encouragement for us and ask that we can encourage others as you would have us do.
