Any Takers?

“Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.”
John 17:3 (NIV)

What if I told you that I have a rich uncle who owns a cruise line and he’s inviting people to take a free cruise? All expenses paid, day and night paradise at sea. Any takers? Well, you may have a few questions. You don’t want to sign up just because it’s free. You’d want to know: Which cruise line? When does it leave and, more importantly, where is it going? What about food? Cabins? Will I be in a suite or a cramped room next to the boiler? Ports of call? Exciting shows? Entertainment? Fun activities? Or is this a trick to get free labour?

Well, relax. It’s the finest cruise line available. You’ll not be disappointed. In fact, it’s more than words can describe. Any takers now? Oh wait, I forgot. You’ll be travelling with my uncle. You’ll be cabin mates, eating meals together and he’ll join you for every excursion. He promises he will never leave you nor forsake you. Now, do I have any takers? Something tells me you will have more questions: Who is this uncle? Can I trust him? Should I sleep with one eye open? Does he snore? Is he nice, mean, weird? A bore?

Well, I don’t have a rich uncle. But I do know someone offering something far better than a cruise. Jesus tells us that he has authority to give us eternal life. And have you noticed that the questions asked about eternal life are similar to my made-up cruise questions? Eternal life is often talked about as if it’s some kind of eternal heavenly cruise that we take without God. But that misses the boat! Jesus gives us the better question to ask (see above).

He focuses our questions, not on the what, when, and where of eternal life, but on who. Who is this true God we will be spending all eternity with? Jesus alone can tell us—he knows his Father perfectly. As we come to know Jesus, we began an eternal journey of knowing the Father. And he assures us that we won’t be disappointed. Any takers?

Gracious Father, Thank you for the truth about the future you call us to. May we embrace it as we journey with you. In Jesus’ name we pray.
