A Place of Safety

“Fear and trembling come upon me, and horror overwhelms me.
And I say, ‘Oh, that I had wings like a dove! I would fly away and be at rest; yes, I would wander far away; I would lodge in the wilderness;’ Selah.”
Psalm 55:5-7 (ESVUK)

In this psalm we can see that David has had enough of what was going on in his life and wants to escape. We might say that we wanted to hop off the world for a while. David’s desired method of transport was air-flight – he wants a personal set of wings. We might prefer a plane, never mind the emissions, and go somewhere, anywhere and take a break from it all. In fact thousands of people hop on planes each year to get away from everyday life for a while.

Taking breaks is a good idea – they can refresh us. Jesus took breaks with his disciples to get away from the crowds. But ‘wings-of-a-dove-itis’ is not so good, however much we may feel we want to run away from life for a while. Usually nothing has changed when we return. And right now we actually cannot take a plane to some faraway destination and find some peace from the assaults of daily life and the worldwide crisis around us anyway.

However, there is a better option that involves a different set of wings. Numerous psalms talk of taking shelter under God’s wings and describe it as a place of refuge, a place to hide, a place to be secure, even a place to sing for joy—till danger passes.

Jesus wept over Jerusalem as he offered the same protection and security and joy. “Jerusalem, Jerusalem!…I have often wanted to gather your people, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings. But you wouldn’t let me” (Matthew 23:37 CEV).

But the offer still stands. Let’s go there and find shelter.

Lord, may we turn to you when we feel we’ve had enough and take refuge under your care.
