Herd Immunity

“Peter replied, ‘Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off—for all whom the Lord our God will call.’”
Acts 2:38-39 (NIV)

The English language is organic and ever changing—love them or loathe them, we have a continuous stream of new buzz words. One of the latest phrases that has become popular due to the Covid-19 virus outbreak is ‘Herd Immunity’. Manish Sadarangani of the Oxford Vaccine Group defines Herd immunity: “it describes how a population is protected from a disease after vaccination by stopping the germ responsible for the infection being transmitted between people. In this way even people who cannot be vaccinated can be protected.”

As a Christian, I pose the question, would not humanity benefit from a ‘vaccination’ of the Holy Spirit that would give us all an immunity toward sin? Unlike the Covid-19 vaccination which may take up to one year to develop, the Holy Spirit is available to all and does give strength to overcome the virus of sin. There is a connection between our reaction to Covid-19 virus and how we live our lives generally.

The fruits of Covid-19 are for some very serious, spreading rapidly. Tragically, it has taken the lives of many across the earth. Now for the good news. The fruit of Christianity as given in Galatians 5:22 is also contagious: “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness.” Much is being done at this time to reflect these qualities. We all need to mirror them. Not just for the duration of the Covid-19 pandemic, but always. Let us produce a ‘Herd Immunity’ against all forms of selfishness and sin. I am reminded of the housewife on the BBC news, who said, when she arrived at the supermarket, she had no intention of panic buying until she saw everyone else doing it, then she felt compelled to do the same.

I call out to all Christians to lead the way in service and love to our fellow man—lets pray for a ‘Herd Immunity’ against sin. We need an epidemic of God’s infinite love. Lets spread His love all around and pray that our nation turns to God at this stressful time.

Loving God, we thank you for your amazing love. Please grant us the power through the Holy Spirit to spread it.
