“Jesus replied: ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’”
Matthew 22:37 (NIV)

It’s finally happened…I can hear you thinking…Irene has finally lost it. Despite these thoughts of yours, I can assure you that the word ‘Cattywampus ‘exists! You can find it in the dictionary—the word describes something that is askew or awry. Saying this word makes us smile – it is part of the eccentricity of the English language and, before the Scots become smug, the origin is thought to possibly derive from the Scots word wampish, meaning to ‘wriggle,’ ‘twist,’ or ‘swerve.’

All of this is humorous, however there is a spiritual lesson contained in this odd word. Can we ask ourselves if these recent times have knocked us awry or askew from our Saviour? As we cope with the inevitable stresses of Covid-19, let’s be sure our focus is on Jesus Christ. It is crucial that we fix our eyes on Him as instructed in Hebrews 12:2, “fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.”

Be in no doubt—God is in charge, and He loves you. Some of the last words of Jesus on this earth was a promise that He would never leave us or forsake us. So, my friends, while the world is besieged by the Covid-19 virus, we also need to be diligent in not falling prey to Cattywampus! Be safe and keep well.

Loving and wonderful Father, thank you for the assurance that we are not alone, that you are with us no matter the trial. Thank you that you, Lord Jesus, were victorious over all human difficulties. We look to you and trust you.
