Advice from Aunt Betsey

“He gives power to the faint, and to him who has no might he increases strength.”
Isaiah 40:29 (ESV)

One of my favourite Dickens novels is David Copperfield. There are a myriad number of worthwhile quotes in the works of Charles Dickens and one of my favourites is from David Copperfield’s Aunt, Miss Betsey. She is confronted by penury and hardship and yet advises her nephew ‘We must meet reverses boldly, and not suffer them to frighten us, my dear. We must learn to act the play out. We must live misfortune down, Trot!’ These are wise words particularly during this time of global crisis due to Covid-19.

Some might say ‘this is easy to say, but harder to apply’ and they would be right – except for one crucial factor – we can ‘live misfortune down’ but only by the power and strength of the Holy Spirit and God’s wonderful grace. God our Father knows our frailties, which is why He has promised to give us the strength to carry on. Read Ephesians 3:16 “I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being”.

I was blessed to have had loving aunts who were quick to share their wisdom with me. Only in later life have I fully appreciated them. With God’s help we can utilise Aunt Betsey’s words ‘We must meet reverses boldly, and not suffer them to frighten us, my dear. We must learn to act the play out. We must live misfortune down, Trot!’

Prayer
Father, thank you for the gifts you have so freely given us, in this case, the gift of writing, to inspire and encourage. By your incredible grace we will get through this trial.
