It’s in Our DNA

“Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.”
John 15:4-5 (ESV)

Paul tells us that when Jesus walked out of the tomb on the third day into the grey dawn of the new morning, he became the first fruits of the new creation (1 Corinthians 15:20). He’s referring us right back to Genesis, where on the third day God said: “Let the earth sprout vegetation, plants yielding seed, and fruit trees bearing fruit in which is their seed, each according to its kind, on the earth.”

We don’t give it another thought when acorns sprout up into oak trees and our tomato plants grow tomatoes. It’s in their DNA. But leaving aside the physical creation, and looking at it spiritually, the bad news is that we have Adam’s DNA and Adam’s fruit was rejection of God and death which we have all inherited from him. We all have that disposition to reject God and go our own ways.

But the good news is that “as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive” (1 Corinthians 15:22). That’s our DNA now and so that’s our fruit now. It’s after its kind and it’s the “fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God” (Philippians 1:11).

Now as part of the body of Christ, with the Spirit in us, we reproduce the fruits according to his kind – the Christ kind. Jesus even uses the image of himself as the vine, and we as the branches, in him producing fruit, the same fruit as we have seen that he has, and which he now produces in us. It’s in our new creation DNA.

We can be assured that, in spite of set-backs, bad days, bad weeks and stumbles, as part of the second creation, the new creation, we produce fruit ‘according to its kind’ that is, after our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, for we belong to him and are in him and he in us.

Prayer
Father, may we, attached to the vine of Jesus, produce your fruit, to your glory.
Amen
