Unity

“Behold how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!”
Psalm 133:1 (KJV)

In Leviticus 16:21-22 there is an account of Aaron the priest symbolically placing the sins of the people upon a goat (scapegoat verse 10). The animal was then released into the wilderness and banished. This pictured a wonderful release of the burden of sin from the entire nation.

I wish to tell you about a group of people who are responsible for all the sins and shortcomings of the world. And they exist in all societies and lands throughout the earth. They are responsible for such things as greed, selfishness, stupidity, thoughtlessness, unkindness, ignorance, and much more. They are always considered to be ‘out of touch,’ ‘beyond the pale,’ and gormless in all circumstances. Who could they possibly be? The answer is found in the title of Van Morrison’s first group in Belfast in the ‘60’s—‘THEM’!

They’can contain any group of people, including employers, managers, politicians, parents, motor mechanics, hotel staff, builders, civil servants, NHS staff and GPs – the list is endless. Sadly they can also exist in some churches as well. We must guard against their presence in our beloved company of believers.

The Apostle Paul beseeched the church in Corinth to be unified in Jesus Christ, and have no divisions. Even his letters to the churches were read out to the congregations showing openness to both leaders and members. There’s was no ‘’us and them’’ with Paul. Remember that when we create a ‘’them’’ we simultaneously create an ‘’us’’ – and of course we all know that ‘we’ or ‘us’ are always ‘right’!

In Romans 16 we have a great list of members mentioned as being truly united in supporting the church together with an appeal from Paul to avoid those who sow discord and division. In conclusion let’s banish ‘US and THEM’’ and replace with ‘WE and OUR’ in all our labours within this blessed group–Christians called out of darkness into light by God through Jesus Christ.

Prayer
Dear Father, help us to be unified in our worship and labours every day and may everything we do be to your glory.
Amen
