The World’s Greatest Mentor

“For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.”
Hebrews 4:15-16 (NKJV)

Mentoring is much in vogue at the moment, especially in the business world. A mentor is someone who can guide, counsel and advise someone who is seeking to learn a new skill. They have usually ‘been there, done that,’ seen and perhaps made the mistakes and had the successes; and have the history and experiences to help a trainee learn the ropes.

As Christians, our mentor is Jesus Christ, the greatest mentor of all time, who through his Word, the Bible, will guide, counsel and advise us on our Christian calling and profession. He can help us to present ourselves “approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth” (2 Timothy 2:15).

As our header scripture shows, Jesus our Mentor, has ‘been there, done that” and His experiences equipped him to fully understand and sympathize with our difficulties. He has the history to help us and even suffered and tasted death for everyone, becoming the captain (or mentor) of our salvation (Hebrews 2:9-10). 1 Corinthians 1:30 says “of Him you are in Christ Jesus, who became for us wisdom from God—and righteousness and sanctification and redemption.”

Father in Heaven, we look to our great Mentor, Jesus Christ, to guide and lead us on our journey as we learn the ropes of Christianity, and we pray in His name.
