“For God did not give us a spirit of cowardice, but rather a spirit of power and of love and of self-discipline.”
2 Timothy 1:7 (NRSV)

My DIY skills are quite limited, but I get by, usually as a result of having the right tool for the job; whatever it takes. You know, I have a small device in my toolbox that really excels: it’s called a spirit level. If I have a shelf, a tile, or anything else that needs to be straight and level, the spirit level is my best friend. It doesn’t require any special skill or effort on my part. I just yield to this little vial of fluid with a bubble and accept the result it gives; the bubble, centred between the two small lines, means its dead level. I don’t interfere by squinting along the edge of the shelf and deciding; “No! It’s not level!” I allow this device to do what it has been designed to do; and then it’s job done! No argument, no fuss, just acceptance brings about the success I seek. It does something that I cannot accomplish by my own efforts. That usually makes me smile!

There are so many things that we frail humans cannot achieve by our own efforts. For example, forgiveness—we need to be forgiven and attain true righteousness. We need to have that given to us, (self-righteousness is easy but quite useless) reconciliation to God, we need a Saviour and his gift of grace! But, guess what? Our Father gives us a very special Friend to make everything possible; just like my spirit level makes it possible for me to level things. He, the Holy Spirit brings level-headedness to my life by the mind of Christ—it’s a gift of love! “Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 2:5).

You know, it’s so easy to scoff and say, “Surely that isn’t possible!” But the proof of the pudding is in the eating, or suck it and see, and then take the bull by the horns! It always takes courage to do that, to step out in faith not knowing what the outcome will be—that’s called faith! The encouraging thing is, Jesus himself told his disciples that “with God all things are possible” (Matthew 19:26 NIV).

Please ask for this gift today and test the fruits; I think that you’ll be amazed!

Thank you, Father, that you supply our every need in Jesus Christ and that your Spirit of truth leads us into all truth and soundness of mind.
