Grace, Space and Pace!

“For by Grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.”
Ephesians 2.8-9 (NKJV)

Many people may not remember Jaguar cars famous advertising line of ‘Grace, Space and Pace!’ in the 1950s and 60s. Grace related to the design and style of the cars, Space indicated that they were roomy and comfortable inside, and Pace indicated that they were fast sports saloons or sports cars. But that advertising line also has a meaning for Christians although you might not immediately think so. Looking at those three words and their meaning to a Christian might make you think again:

Grace refers to God’s unconditional love. God’s love for you, for all humanity, is so great He sent his only begotten son, Jesus Christ, to die for the sins of every individual human being! That awesome truth is summed up in that word Grace. It means what we receive is totally undeserved and unmerited. We can do nothing to earn it, it’s ours as a gift.

Space refers to the fact that God allows you not to believe in Him. God is not in a race to reach and save every human being now! He will not force anyone to believe in Him today but has provided for every human being to know Him one day, as incredible as that may sound!

Pace refers to the fact that God allows each individual to proceed at their own speed, whether a new Christian slowly setting out to follow God or one who is desperate to find out as much as possible as quickly as possible. Some people are ready to jump in and change their way of life overnight, others take time to come to a fuller understanding of what being a Christian means.

Even people who have been Christians for many years go through periods of fast and slow growth in their lifetime. So maybe it’s time to think about what Grace, Space and Pace mean to you? Next time you see a Jaguar XK 120, 140 or 150 sports car, or the 2.4, 3.4 or 3.8 sports saloons from the 50s and 60s take a look and ask yourself if they don’t perfectly illustrate that slogan of Grace, Space and Pace. Maybe seeing one of those cars will remind you of this article and of God’s Grace, Space and Pace for you.

God of grace, thank You that You love us undeserving humanity, with such incredible patience you give us space to grow at our own pace. In Jesus’ name we pray.
