Opposites Attract?

“The Lord your God is with you, the Mighty Warrior who saves. He will take great delight in you; in his love he will no longer rebuke you, but will rejoice over you with singing.”
Zephaniah 3:17 (NIV)

The debate continues, do opposite personalities really attract? According to ‘Psychology Today’ ‘the subject is complicated. “Studies have found that people are more likely to be attracted to and pursue romantic relationships with individuals who are more like themselves across a broad range of personal characteristics, including age, religion, political orientation, and certain aspects of intelligence.” Theories abound for both sides of the argument.

God has opposites in His nature, and they are highly attractive. We have a God who has immeasurable power. Isaiah 40:12 says “Who has measured the waters in the hollow of His hand, or with the breadth of his hand marked off the heavens? Who has held the dust of the earth in a basket, or weighed the mountains on the scales and the hills in a balance?” This mighty being has made men quake since their creation. God challenged Job in chapter 38:4 “Where were you when I laid the earth’s foundation? Tell me, if you understand.” God’s creation declares His supremacy and omnipotence. The force of the wind, the roar of rushing waters, the crashing of thunder and the speed of lightning – all of these are amplitudes of His greatness.

God, in His infinite wisdom knows our frailties. There is a wonderful account of how God deals with us in the story of how God spoke to Elijah. There had been a fierce wind strong enough to smash rocks and cause an earthquake, then fire. But God did not speak through any of this – no – it was a still small voice. And after the earthquake a fire; but the Lord was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice. Every parent knows nothing is to be gained by shouting—quiet reasoning is far more effective. Our Wonderful all-powerful God chooses to speak to us in a ‘still small voice.’

This is the God we come to in prayer – this amazing God of opposites. How marvellous He is!

How Great you are Father – thank you for your loving mercy toward us.
