The Way

“Paul entered the synagogue and spoke boldly there for three months, arguing persuasively about the kingdom of God. But some of them became obstinate; they refused to believe and publicly maligned the Way.”
Acts 19:8-9 (NIV)

The Danish philosopher and theologian Soren Kierkegaard believed that Christianity was not a doctrine to be taught but rather a Life to be lived. This does not negate the necessity to “grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ” (2 Peter 3:18). However, we are called to be followers and imitators of Jesus Christ. This requires us to LIVE OUT the example set by our Lord and Master.

In Acts 19:9, our header scripture, there is a reference to Christians following in ‘The Way.’ Or as the Message Bible puts it, “then resistance began to form as some of them began spreading evil rumors through the congregation about the Christian way of life.” This clearly indicates that true believers were not just preaching their faith but were LIVING their faith by their way of life.

I have known many churchgoers who have spent inordinate amounts of time seeking answers to the great imponderable questions of life, the universe, and existence. We are not called by God to uncover all the mysteries of physics, creation, and life sciences. Our commission is to proclaim by word and DEED the joy of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. This is even more exciting than the contents of Dan Brown’s Da Vinci Code! (by a long way).

Imagine if all the world leaders were to love the Lord God with all their hearts and their neighbours as themselves, and understood that their neighbours were everyone on earth! (Mark12:29-31). This world would be transformed overnight.

Let’s not tire of preaching and living the Gospel of Jesus Christ and look forward to the future when all will follow in that wonderful ‘Way.’

Loving Father, help us to realise that we have been called into a Way of Life which should reflect the love you have for us and this world. This wonderful truth is revealed in and through Jesus Christ. Please help us to walk in Your Way. In Jesus’ name.
