Best Advice

“But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.”
Matthew 6:33 (ESV)

We are always being given advice. From the time when we were children, our parents, family members and school teachers gave us advice. Sometimes the advice was good and at other times, not so good, because our parents, family members and teachers are not perfect. But we do have a heavenly Father who is perfect, and knows us better than our parents or teachers. Through his Son Jesus Christ, we have been given the best advice possible, which is to seek his kingdom and righteousness above everything else!

There are many things in our fallen world competing for our attention. Work and family commitments are important and necessary. Sport, travel, entertainment and our own agendas are not the most important priorities in life, but are treated as such by many people. This present evil age is temporary; it is passing away, along with all the things that distract us from taking Jesus’ advice seriously. “This is what I mean, brothers: the appointed time has grown very short. From now on, let those…who deal with the world as though they had no dealings with it. For the present form of this world is passing away” (1 Corinthians 7:29-31).

Jesus is the representative of the Kingdom of God (Luke 17:21). By seeking a personal relationship with him, we will be putting into practice the best advice given, which is to seek his kingdom and righteousness first. The kingdom of God is going to last forever. This present world with all of its distractions will eventually pass away, as it says in Revelation 21:4, “He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.”

Prayer
Father in heaven, please open our eyes to the importance of taking seriously the good advice that Jesus gave when he instructed us to seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness. In Jesus’ name we pray.
Amen
