Project Fear

“Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God.”
Romans 13:1 (NKJV)

What an interesting three years we have had. There is a great deal of passion on both sides of the ‘Brexit’ issue, of which ‘Project Fear’ is one of the slogans, but we need not get swept up by it. What a blessing that as a Christian we can take an interest, but we don’t need to get worried about the future. Whether we are for Leave or Remain, we know it can all be safely left in God’s hands.

But of far more importance to us is another ‘Project Fear’ that does not get talked about, or have headlines in the media. That is the constant campaign by some people to drive Christianity, and some Christians, out of the public square. It is suggested that people only believed in God in the past because they were ignorant, that science has shown there is no God, and that Christianity is old fashioned and irrelevant today. It is suggested that Christianity is the cause of many of the evils of today’s world. In the media and entertainment today, Christians are often portrayed as ignorant, unbalanced, self righteous, sitting in judgment on others and society, while many prominent people in the media and entertainment industry promote themselves as being too intelligent and important to believe in Christian nonsense. This campaign is subtle, it is death for Christianity by a thousand cuts, little insults, divisive comments, a one-sided attack. It is a very brave celebrity who defines himself or herself as Christian today. If you don’t believe it, spend just one week alert for negative and critical comments both spoken and written about Christianity and Christians.

What then do we do? First, remember the scripture in Matthew 16:18 where Christ says I will build my church and the gates of hell will not prevail against it. God has supreme power, Christianity may wax and wane but it will never die! Second, we should pray that God will give us effective leaders who can represent Christianity in the media, often against a hostile interviewer, calmly and convincingly. Third, that God will raise the profile in the media of churches and Christians who are being attacked, often violently. Let us seek to replace project fear with project faith and look forward to Matthew 24.14.

Gracious, loving God, help us to remain calm about the political storms of to-day, not to let passion push us into a judgmental or critical attitude towards others who have a different opinion. Help us to remember always that You are in charge so we can relax, knowing you will guide us as individuals and nations in fulfilling your will. In Jesus’ name we pray.
