Future Fears

“Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.”
Deuteronomy 31:6 (NIV)

For many people today life is full of uncertainty and misgiving, the world seems to be in a turmoil that we are powerless to change. The Scottish poet in the 18th century expressed how he felt about the future in his poem ‘Tae a Moose’ “But Oh! I backward cast my eye, On prospects drear! An’ forward tho’ I cannot see, I guess an’ fear!” (translation by the author).

One of the last promises that Jesus Christ gave us is that He will never leave us or forsake us – why should we fear? Matthew 28:18-20 says “Then Jesus came to them and said, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.’” We have Jesus Christ with us always! He understands how tough this life can be – He lived it! He knows who or what we strive with daily.

With Christ we can conquer! Whatever this world throws at us we can handle thanks to the power and authority of our Lord and Saviour. His death and resurrection ensured our salvation, but He saves us every day from ourselves and Satan the adversary. Fear not my Christian friends, when we are weak, God is strong. Zephaniah 3:15 assures us “The Lord has taken away your punishment, he has turned back your enemy. The Lord, the King of Israel, is with you; never again will you fear any harm.”

The future for Christians is not filled with fear, but hope. We have an assured future with our Father in heaven, sharing in His glory. Now that is something to look forward to!

Prayer
Wonderful, loving Father, thank you for being in our corner – all the time. Thank you for your infinite and unconditional love. We are encouraged to go forward because of it.
Amen
