Preserved in Jesus Christ

“To those who are called, sanctified by God the Father, and preserved in Jesus Christ:”
Jude 1:1 (NKJV)

Did you see the recent TV Programme, Digging For Britain? Among other significant discoveries at their dig in Aylesbury near London, was a 1,700-year-old Roman egg! Four eggs were found preserved in a watery pit, which had kept them from breaking, although they were so fragile that three broke when lifted, releasing a potent stench of rotten egg, but the fourth was kept whole. Over the years there have been many finds by archaeologists of ancient items preserved by mud, sand, salt, ice, in sealed amphorae or pickled in brine. An ancient Roman shipwreck was discovered in March 2019 off the coast of Mallorca in Spain with almost 100 sealed amphorae inside. The sealed amphorae may contain wine, wheat, olive old or other products still recognisable and sometimes still edible!

As a teenager in my Home Economics class we studied methods of preserving food. It can be dried, smoked, pickled in brine, packed in salt, preserved in sugar or sealed in air-tight containers, as well as frozen. The various methods prevent bacteria from breaking down and spoiling the items. My mother would freeze the fish my father caught, under ice in jars. She would also bottle the food we produced on our farm for use during the years following. Some of these jars were discovered in a cupboard which were nearly 50 years old and we opened them to see if they were still edible. Well, you could eat them but they were not always palatable. The frozen fish became stringy in texture and the bottled cherries were soft pulp.

Christians can be preserved perfectly forever in Christ Jesus as the header scripture states. Psalm 37:28 says “the Lord loves justice, and does not forsake His saints; they are preserved forever.” Jesus came to earth as a human baby who lived, died and was resurrected for us so that we “should not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:15). In fact, like my mother’s jars, we are ‘sealed’ against the sins of the world, forgiven and preserved in Christ. Read 2 Corinthians 1:20-22, “For all the promises of God in Him are Yes, and in Him Amen, to the glory of God through us. Now He who establishes us with you in Christ and has anointed us is God, who also has sealed us and given us the Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee.”

Prayer
Thank you, Father in Heaven, that you promise to preserve us to salvation and eternal life in Jesus Christ through the Holy Spirit.
Amen
