You Decorated My Life!

“I have given them the glory you gave me—the glorious unity of being one, as we are—I in them and you in me, all being perfected into one…”
John 17:22-23 (TLB)

Here’s a thought; many of us decorated a tree last year to celebrate Christmas. The tree itself is nice enough but a bit colourless—unless you really like green of course! So, you festooned it with fairy lights and tinsel, placed a star on the highest branch and arranged all the family gifts underneath and didn’t it look really great?

But what about our lives—is it possible to obtain a life that really shines, that brings joy and cheer to others? That lights up a room with a bright glow and has been loaded with gifts for others to enjoy? The answer to these questions is a resounding—“Yes!”

Those who have come to Jesus and placed their lives into his amazing care are called ‘The light of the world’ by Jesus himself. Of course, it is His bright light that fills them and lights them up. Matthew 5:14 records him telling his followers this—“You are the world’s light—a city on a hill, glowing in the night for all to see.” So, these ordinary human beings have a special glow that is not of this world!

He also fills their lives with gifts that become a part of them—these gifts are bestowed by the Spirit of Truth, because he fills them with the love of God. Paul points out in one of his letters that “When the Holy Spirit controls our lives he will produce this kind of fruit in us: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self control” (Galatians 5:22-23). If you think about this you can only come to the conclusion that, like the song Kenny Rogers sang, God really does decorate the lives of those who have accepted him and are yielded to the Spirit not just at this special time but all year through!

Perhaps you have made contact with God for the first time this Christmas. If you have, you will soon notice a change as He begins to decorate your life, working powerfully in your mind and heart, opening your eyes to new things and teaching you to live for him as a light in a dark place! And if you haven’t met Jesus this year, here’s a thought for the New Year: have you considered a special resolution for 2020 yet? How about having your life decorated by Jesus—you’ll be glad you did!

Heavenly Father, please continue to call others to your son Jesus, and decorate their lives so that they might shine brightly with your glory.
